The Best Time to Clean Windows on the Central Coast: Before or After the Rain?

Waiting for the rainy season to end can mean looking through summer's dirt for months. If your windows already have a dull film or dusty edges, we recommend cleaning them during a workable break in the weather. You don't need to wait until spring.

If the glass still looks good and a wind-driven storm is about to arrive, waiting until it passes makes sense. The best time to clean windows on the Central Coast depends on what's on them now and whether the weather allows us to work safely.

Check what is on the glass now

In Los Osos, Morro Bay, or Cayucos, salt is one possible source of that hazy view. Breaking waves release sea-salt particles into the air. A coastal address alone doesn't tell us what every mark is, though. Sprinkler spots and other residue need a different assessment.

For a home in Paso Robles or Atascadero, look for dust along the lower pane, sill, and screen, especially near unpaved roads or recent yard work. Compare the exposed side of the house with windows under deep eaves. They may need different attention.

Look through the glass from indoors in daylight. If a film is interfering with the view you use every day, that's a reason to clean now, even if rain is somewhere in the forecast.

Rain can leave marks, even after cleaning

We wouldn't promise that rain never spots a clean window. USGS explains that rain droplets begin forming around dust, salt, or smoke particles. Rain isn't a particle-free rinse.

Water can also move dirt from a screen or frame onto the glass. Wind-blown debris and splash from nearby soil can leave fresh marks. How much reaches a pane depends on its exposure and the storm.

A shower doesn't necessarily undo the whole cleaning, though. Removing the existing film still gives you a clearer view. We just wouldn't suggest booking on the assumption that every pane will stay spotless through winter.

Include screens and tracks in the plan

Before booking, take a look at the mesh and open an accessible window to check the track. Clean glass behind a dusty screen can still leave you looking through dirt.

Marvin's care guidance includes removing sand, dirt, and dust from sills and tracks, plus cleaning screens. It also says to let screens dry completely before reinstalling them.

Ask whether your estimate includes interior and exterior glass, screens, tracks, and any removable rails. Cleaning around the window is part of our Dutch approach, but the scope should be clear before work starts.

If you notice standing water or a leak, mention it separately. Cleaning isn't a substitute for a window repair.

Find a workable break in the weather

Check the short-range forecast for your town and the hours of the appointment. Look for a break that allows the work to be completed safely, without strong winds or driving rain. There's no universal number of dry days you need afterward.

A cool, cloudy day can be a good choice. Marvin recommends avoiding direct sunlight to prevent streaking and loosening debris with clean water before using a nonabrasive applicator.

For reachable ground-floor glass, follow your window manufacturer's instructions and use an approved cleaner. Don't rub a gritty pane dry or use a scraper. Leave upper windows and awkward access to a professional, and discuss weather-related rescheduling before the appointment.

When waiting makes sense

If a storm is due tomorrow and your view is still clear, we'd wait for it to pass. But we'd clean glass that's already filmed over during a safe weather break rather than carry that buildup into winter.

After a storm, let the windows dry before judging them. Check the exposed panes first. A few new marks on one side of the house don't automatically call for another full interior-and-exterior cleaning.
