El Niño and Your Gutters: Pre-Storm Prep for SLO County Homes

El Niño headlines are a useful reminder to check your gutters. While the weather is dry, look from the ground for leaves piled at roof corners. If they need attention, arrange gutter cleaning and note where water goes after it leaves each downspout.

We would start with those basics instead of waiting for a rainfall forecast to expose a problem at the house.

What the El Niño outlook says

In its August 13, 2026 advisory, NOAA reported a strengthening El Niño, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during fall and winter 2026–27. NOAA also cautioned that the expected impacts are not guaranteed.

That probability is about El Niño's strength, not local rainfall. It does not tell us how much rain will fall in Los Osos, Morro Bay or Paso Robles. It also does not tell us when a large storm might arrive. For near-term conditions, check the National Weather Service forecast and select your location.

You can prepare for rain without assuming a record-breaking winter.

Walk the gutter line before you book work

SLO County's storm guidance recommends cleaning gutters, maintaining trees, and having roofs inspected or repaired before storm season. Keep your own first look at ground level.

Walk around the house in safe, dry weather. Look for leaves or twigs sticking above the gutter edge, especially below nearby branches. You will not be able to see inside every section from below. Make a note of those areas instead of climbing for a better view.

Look for old signs of overflow too. Streaks on gutter faces, watermarks and eroded soil beneath the roof edge can indicate overflow. Photograph each spot from the ground so you can point it out when arranging help.

Follow each downspout to the ground

Do not stop your check at the roof edge. Federal building guidance explains that downspouts carry collected roof water to ground level, where it needs to drain away from the foundation.

At each downspout, check what you can see:

• Are any sections disconnected or visibly damaged?
• Is the outlet covered by leaves, soil or mulch?
• Does the extension point away from the house?
• Where did water collect during the last rain?

Pick up loose surface debris around accessible outlets and yard-drain grates while conditions are dry. Leave the grates in place. An outlet may look open even if the pipe above it or a buried drain farther along is blocked.

If a downspout goes underground and you do not know where it drains, or if water repeatedly collects against the house, arrange a drainage assessment. Gutter cleaning cannot confirm that the entire drainage route works.

Separate cleaning from repairs

If a gutter still overflows after cleaning, something else may be wrong. An undersized system can spill even when it is free of debris. Sagging sections, detached downspouts and known roof leaks also need attention from the appropriate repair professional.

Keep every check at ground level and get help with anything you cannot inspect safely. Once a storm starts, leave the ladder put away. Watch from indoors if you have a useful view. Save any follow-up inspection for safe weather.
